亞瑟王傳說的時代背景

43－ca. 420 羅馬帝國統治不列顛 Ca. 450盎格魯薩克遜人征服不列顛 大約便是這個時代，主講人同時還提到了羅馬和盎格魯薩克遜人間的戰爭，亞瑟王其實具有民族英雄的特色，所以後來被戰爭的雙方拿來當作傳說的素材，或拿來提升士氣，或拿來打擊士氣。 主講人介紹了幾個可能是凱美洛或阿瓦隆的地方： Tintagel island Tintagel ruins Glastonbury Cadbury hill-fort

歷史與亞瑟王

歷史上到底有沒有亞瑟王存在呢？ 據Geoffrey Ashe的調查，這位Riothamus, King of the Britons可能就是亞瑟王，他於469-470在高盧有過軍事行動，是一位抵抗盎格魯薩克遜人入侵羅馬的英雄，只是後來盎格魯薩克遜人反而將他奉為自己的英雄。 他的名字不叫亞瑟，但據推論，Riothamus有可能只是稱號（意為「king-most」；「supreme king」或「supremely royal」）而不是名字。而在Riothamus的時代，忽然很多人取名為亞瑟，可能就是出字Riothamus的敬重，這是Riothamus可能就是亞瑟王的間接證劇。 主講人還說了一些亞瑟王在歷史上的傳聞，像是亞瑟王的墓已經被發現，之類的。

亞瑟王的各種形象

隨著時代轉移和亞瑟王傳奇作者的時代轉移，亞瑟王在故事中的形象也有了轉變： 一、戰士。最初的亞瑟王是大塊吃肉大口喝酒的戰士，在戰場上殺起人來非常威猛。 二、和平時期的王者。 三、聖王。這個時期的亞瑟王主要都待在宮殿裡，不再到外面出征。在圓桌武士都出去找聖杯時，甚至還有亞瑟王在卡美洛中孤單地看著空無一人的宮殿的描寫。

亞瑟

梅林與薇薇安

Aubrey Vincent Beardsley, Merlin (1983) 梅林的圖。 Edward Coley Burne-Jones, Merlin and Nimüe (1861) Edward Coley Burne-Jones The Beguiling of Merlin (1872-77) 主講人很喜歡的一張圖。 "The Lady of the Lake Steals Lancelot" 關於湖中女神的傳說的一張圖。

摩根勒菲

蘭斯洛特和桂妮薇

William Dyce, Mercy: Sir Gawaine Swearing To Be Merciful etc. (1854) 這張的桂妮薇有著聖潔的形象。 William Morris (1858) 畫上的人是不是桂妮薇似乎有爭議，但值得注意的是她的表情不快樂。 John Collier, Queen Guinevere's maying (1900) Gustave Doré, The Dawn of Love Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Sir Lancelot in the Queen’s Chamber. (1857) 兩人姦情被發現的一幕。

崔斯坦與伊索德

主講人說是亞瑟王傳說中有名的姦夫淫婦，而崔斯坦和蘭斯洛特關係好到很誇張的程度。 John William Waterhouse, Tristram and Isolde (1916) 愛情魔咒。 Edmund Blair Leighton, Tristran and Isolde (1902) 有人在後面看。 Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Tristram and Isolde Drinking the Love Potion (1867) 另一個愛情魔咒的畫面，我們對後面的紅天使是什麼意思討論了很久。

伊蓮與夏洛特小姐
